Verifying the Pacific, Protecting Our Stories.
Check Pacific is an independent, non-partisan fact-checking organisation dedicated to combating mis-and disinformation across Pacific island communities.
Our Mission
The Pacific is home to some of the world's most geographically dispersed communities, connected by shared cultures, languages and increasingly — shared misinformation. Check Pacific exists to provide rigorous, evidence-based fact-checking that serves Pacific peoples first.
We believe accurate information is a public good. When false claims go unchallenged — whether about climate change, elections, health, or finance — real harm follows. Our work is to slow that harm by holding claims to account with transparency and respect for Pacific voices.
Independence
We accept no direction from governments, political parties, or commercial interests. Our funding sources are publicly disclosed and our editorial decisions are made solely by our journalists.
Transparency
Every fact-check shows its sources, methodology and reasoning. We correct errors promptly and prominently. Our process is open to scrutiny.
Pacific-first
We are led by Pacific journalists and researchers who understand the cultural, political and linguistic context of the communities we serve.
Rigour
We follow the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) code of principles. Claims are investigated thoroughly before any verdict is published.
How We Work
Our fact-checking process follows a consistent, documented methodology applied to every claim we investigate.
Claim selection
We prioritise claims that are widely shared, potentially harmful and verifiable. We do not fact-check opinions or predictions.
Primary source research
Journalists contact official bodies, review government records, consult scientific literature and speak with subject-matter experts.
Editorial review
Every fact-check is reviewed by a senior editor before publication. Verdicts require documented evidence, not assumption.
Publication and correction
Published fact-checks include all sources. Errors are corrected with a visible note. We do not silently edit published work.

Editorial Independence
Check Pacific is funded through a combination of grants from journalism foundations, membership fees from our partner network, and reader contributions. We do not accept advertising or funding from political parties, governments, or entities with a direct interest in our coverage.
A full list of our funders is published annually. No funder has any editorial input. Our journalists are employed under contracts that explicitly protect their editorial independence.
Partner Network
Check Pacific works with a network of media organisations, universities and civil society groups across the Pacific.
